Watauga Seed Library

Where is it? Located at the Watauga County Public Library, 140 Queen St, Boone, NC 28607.
What is the Seed Library? Housed in an old card catalog, are packets of open-pollinated seeds available for community members to check out, for free. We hope this encourages more people to start growing and enjoying fresh vegetables from their gardens.

Patrons are also welcome to then save seed from the plants they grow and return these seeds to the Seed Library. This is important for the Seed Library to sustain! Not sure how to save seeds? Check out the seed saving page and guides, as well as the helpful booklist.

History & Partners

Town of Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz & County Librarian Monica Caruso open the Watauga Seed Library
Organized in the fall of 2016, this endeavor is a collaborative partnership between the Ashe County Public Library, the Watauga County Public Library and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture. It is supported by the Ashe and Watauga County Cooperative Extension Services.

The Seed Library owes its origins to our region's long history of growing and saving seeds.
For many years, growers have gathered at the High Country Seed Swap and Growers Exchange to share varieties and stories. Community members approached Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture and the Appalachian Regional Public Library about forming a Seed Library in Boone and West Jefferson in 2016. This effort easily fit within the area's Cooperative Extension office's programming to encourage gardeners of all skill levels to grow their own food and save seeds.

The Seed Library learned how to establish a seed library from Gary Nabhan of the University of Arizona Southwest Center, Jim Veteto of Southern Seed Legacy and Western Carolina University, our region's many seed libraries, and our community's goals and experiences.
